Loading...Situated in the Venetian fortress “Komuna“, in Komiža. It contains a rich collection of original items of fishing boats and fishing equipments belonging to the local fishermen, for centuries known as the best ones in the Adriatic Sea.
Besides, there is a displayed collection of fishing tools, used for fish processing, highly developed in the past. Amongst the exhibts, a special attention is drawn by a replica of the famous Komiža’s fishing boat, called “Gajeta Falkuša.“
FALKUŠA → unique Komiža`s boats nine-meter long and less than three-meter wide with nine-meter high mast. The boat could carry six fishermen and almost eight tons of fish. They were mainly made from pine wood, brought from the island of Svetac, considered to be the most quality one. During favourable winds, the boats could reach the island of Palagruža in six hour time, achieving the speed of ten nautical miles per hour. The last original falkuša “Cicibela“ was sunk in a severe storm, in August 1986. Fortunately, the tradition has been revived and three new boats are used in tourism today.
